A word counter that respects your writing

WordWise is a free online word counter and character counter that runs entirely in your browser. Paste an essay, blog post, social media caption or email and get a live word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, reading time and speaking time. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged — disconnect from the internet and it keeps counting.

Count words for essays, posts and captions

Essays and assignments

Hitting a word count is part of the brief. WordWise counts words the way most word processors do — hyphenated words and contractions count once — so your essay word count here matches what your teacher or editor sees.

Blog posts and SEO content

Use the keyword density checker to spot over-used terms and confirm your main keyword appears naturally. The limits panel tracks Google title (60 characters) and meta description (160 characters) lengths so your snippets don't get cut off in search results.

Social media

The live limit bars show exactly how much room is left in an X (Twitter) post, Instagram caption, LinkedIn post or SMS — no more posting, failing and trimming.

Reading time and speaking time

Reading time is estimated at 225 words per minute, the average adult silent-reading pace. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a comfortable presentation speed — useful for scripting talks, videos and voice-overs.

FAQ

Is this word counter really private?

Yes. Open your browser's network tab while typing — zero requests. Counting happens entirely on your device, and the optional draft autosave stays in your browser's local storage only.

Does it work offline?

Yes. WordWise is an installable app — once loaded, no internet connection is needed.

How are sentences counted?

A sentence ends with a period, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. Abbreviations can occasionally add a count — treat it as a close estimate.

Is there a limit on text length?

No hard limit. WordWise comfortably handles book-length manuscripts; very large texts may update with a slight delay.
