How the dog age calculator works

The formula “multiply by seven” has been around for decades — and it has never been right. Dogs mature far faster than humans in their first two years, then slow down. A 1-year-old dog is roughly a 15-year-old human: fully grown, adolescent, able to reproduce. By age two they're about 24 in human years. From there, every extra dog year adds roughly 4 to 7 human years depending on size — because in the dog world, bigger means faster aging.

PawAge uses the size-adjusted conversion chart popularized by veterinarians and the American Kennel Club. Pick your dog's adult weight class — small, medium, large or giant — enter the age in years and months, and the calculator interpolates the chart for an accurate dog years to human years conversion.

How the cat age calculator works

Cats age on their own curve. A kitten races to the equivalent of 15 human years in its first twelve months and hits about 24 by age two. After that, feline aging settles into a steady rhythm: each cat year adds roughly 4 human years. That makes a 10-year-old cat about 56, and a 16-year-old cat about 80 — plenty of cats today reach their human-equivalent nineties.

Why the “7 dog years” rule is a myth

If dogs really aged seven years for every human year, a 1-year-old dog would behave like a 7-year-old child — but a 1-year-old dog is a fully grown adolescent. And a 15-year-old dog would be a 105-year-old human, yet plenty of small dogs are still trotting to the park at that age. Aging in dogs is non-linear: extremely fast at the start, slower later, and strongly dependent on size.

The science: a 2019 study from UC San Diego compared DNA methylation patterns (the “epigenetic clock”) in Labrador Retrievers and humans, and found dog aging follows a logarithmic curve — roughly human age ≈ 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. PawAge shows this DNA-clock estimate alongside the vet chart for adult dogs. It's based on one breed, so treat it as a fascinating second opinion rather than gospel.

Tips for adding healthy years

Whatever the calculator says, the levers for a longer, healthier pet life are consistent: keep your pet lean (studies in Labradors showed lean-fed dogs lived about two years longer), care for their teeth, keep up parasite prevention and vaccines, and don't skip senior checkups — cats especially hide illness well. For giant breeds and purebred cats, ask your vet about breed-specific screening.

FAQ

How old is my dog in human years?

Enter the age and size above. As a shortcut: 15 human years for year one, 24 by year two, then +4 to +7 per year by size.

How old is my cat in human years?

15 for the first year, 24 by the second, then add 4 per year. A 4-year-old cat is about 32.

Do small dogs really live longer?

Yes — it's one of biology's oddities. Across mammals bigger species live longer, but within dogs, breeds under 10 kg routinely reach 14–16 while giant breeds average 8–10. Faster growth appears to carry an aging cost.

Is one cat year 7 human years?

No — same myth, wrong species. Cats reach human-equivalent adulthood in one year and then age about 4 human years per cat year.

Does this replace veterinary advice?

No. PawAge is an educational tool — for health decisions, always consult your veterinarian.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. PawAge installs as an app on your home screen and works offline once loaded.
